Carol S. Dweck, a psychology professor from the University of Stanford, has published a study discussing how human beings are divided into two types of mindsets. These are “Fixed” and “Growth.” Dweck, who is also a leading expert in her field, found out that these mindsets are usually set at an early age. Interestingly, there is a way to change them along with the right guidance. If you want to know more about the importance of teaching your kids to have the right mindset, better check out this fantastic TED lecture (your kids will thank you in the future). Effective Ways to Keep a Strong Marriage

#1. Communication is key

Maintaining good communication is an effective way to keep a strong marriage. During happiness and weak moments, always maintain good communication with your spouse. Ask if you think there’s something that is bothering him. Remember to give your time and random compliments or appreciation to keep that spark in your relationship fully alive.

#2. Maintain passion and intimacy

When we say intimacy, it is not only about quality time in the bedroom. It is also about doing your favorite hobbies together (e.g., cooking). Or, take a walk on the beach and end the day with a kiss. To keep a strong marriage, you should maintain passion and intimacy. You can also pamper each other with hand and foot massage while watching your favorite shows. Simple acts yet very romantic.

#3. Make time to bond with each other’s families and friends

Don’t lock up your spouse and don’t isolate yourself too as it won’t help to keep a strong marriage when there’s a time, bond with family members and friends on both sides. Let’s say during special occasions like birthdays. Doing so won’t only improve your social capabilities but also keep the marriage strong. Not to mention, you’ll also gain true family and friends!

#4. Know when to talk and listen

We all have bad days, and married couples are no exception. You and your spouse sometimes need to vent and flow all the frustrations of the day. Know your limits. Let your partner know when you want to be confronted and heard. Knowing the right time when to talk and listen is an effective way to keep a healthy marriage.

#5. Get away together

Escape for a while with your partner. Check in a hotel down the street or a house by the beach. This allows both of you to spend quality time with each other and at the same time keep a strong marriage.

A good sense of humor is also essential to keep a strong marriage. Don’t be overly sensitive or uptight. Laugh off a joke together.

Getting into marriage doesn’t necessarily mean throwing away all those bonds with your old and new friends. Your spouse and kids need you but don’t forget your friends. Make time to bond with them once in a while without dropping off your responsibility as a wife/husband and mother/father. This will help to improve your mood and keep a strong marriage.
